Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav visited the area on Tuesday along with civic officials and local representatives and asked residents and shop owners to remove structures falling within the proposed 60-feet road width within three days. He warned that the corporation would begin removal action if encroachments were not cleared voluntarily.
Several residents opposed the move and said their properties are legally registered and cannot be treated as encroachments. Local residents claimed many houses in the area are more than 100 years old and some families possess property documents dating back to 1898. Former Bar Association president and advocate Basant Rao said the area was developed during the British period and questioned the legality of demolition action.
Residents also referred to a previous court stay on similar action in 2014 and demanded that the road should first be tested as a one-way route to reduce traffic pressure. The civic body, however, said the Madhumilan to Chhawani stretch is an important city corridor and widening work is necessary to improve traffic movement in the area.
