The Indore-Ujjain Greenfield Corridor has faced a major legal hurdle after the High Court stayed land possession in parts of the project. The order gives relief to farmers who challenged land acquisition for the proposed 48.1 km four-lane road.
Court Protects Farmers’ Land
The court said land of farmers who have not taken compensation should not be acquired for now. Farmers who already received compensation can also get stay protection if they return the amount.
The Indore-Ujjain Greenfield Corridor is planned from Pitru Parvat in Indore to near Chintaman Ganesh temple on Ujjain bypass. The government claims the road will cut travel time between Indore and Ujjain to about 30 minutes.
Dispute Over Acquisition Process
Farmers from Sagwal village in Hatod tehsil opposed the acquisition of 16.496 hectares of land. They alleged legal gaps in the notification process.
Their petition claimed the notification mentioned only the expert group’s opinion. It did not include the required summary of the social impact report.
Government’s Stand in Court
The state government told the court that it would follow land acquisition, rehabilitation and resettlement laws. It also said some farmers had accepted compensation, while others were ready to receive it.
The court noted that if land possession continues during the hearing, the petition may lose meaning. It ordered status quo for eligible farmers.
What Happens Next
Farmers who want to continue the legal fight must return compensation. From the date of return, their land will get stay protection.
The Indore-Ujjain Greenfield Corridor case will now move ahead in court. The project remains important for Simhastha planning and regional connectivity.
